Every Tuesday in June, Viraso Bar at Guatemala 4328 transforms into a Cinema. This month: flicks with soundtracks by classic film composer Franz Waxman. Tonight at 9.30pm is Delmer Dave’s ‘Dark Passage’. Call to reserve your seat: 4831-8918.
Franz Waxman began his career composing for films in Europe, but in 1934 arrived in the US as an exile and began working for the big Hollywood studios. He’s received 12 Oscar nominations, winning two consecutively for ‘Sunset Boulevard’ and ‘A Place in the Sun’.
Employing a highly provoking technique, which broke cinematography norms of the period, the film’s plot is narrated largely from the protagonist’s perspective. Meaning that Bogart does not appear on the screen until an hour in to the film! The shots of San Francisco in the 40s and the moments of suspense set to music by Waxman make this film, a few script slip-ups asside, an interesting study in black cinema.
