8th June marks Polish Settlers Day in Argentina, in celebration of the Argentina’s third largest immigrant community after Spanish and Italians, a fact that may be surprising to some. Perhaps this is due to a strong desire to assimilate, as Vicky Gashe discovers when she meets some key members of the Argentine Polish community.

Sub, a photographic cooperative, recently exhibited a series of photos taken in two barrios of Buenos Aires, La Boca and Barracas. Neither of these barrios are particularly picturesque. La Boca has the photogenic Caminito, but there’s nothing there that hasn’t been reprinted in a million postcards. However, their photos created a journey of discovery that took the viewer through the lives of the people within these barrios.

On 25th May 2010, Argentina will mark 200 years since the 1810 May Revolution. That date commemorates the movement that led to Argentina breaking away from imperial Spain, as before that date Argentina, along with neighbours Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay were all part of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, a Spanish colony. But what exactly are they celebrating?
