Jan 2010 – Fireworks explode over the city of Buenos Aires, as a floating lantern floats by in the sky. The pyrotechnics went off all over the city and the surrounding province to ring in the new year and decade.

December 2009 – Students at Nacional Buenos Aires celebrate “La Vuelta OlÃmpica”. In this chaotic end of the year street party, they cover each other in paint, shaving cream, hurling eggs and other food stuffs at their friends, lighting off fire crackers and smoke bombs.

Nov 2009 – It’s springtime in Buenos Aires and the jacaranda trees burst forth with their purple flowers to herald the warm weather. Pedestrians are shaded from the sun under this arch of jacaranda trees at Tribunales as they go about their business on this warm spring day.

October 2009 – The lighthouse on top of the architectural masterpiece, Palacio Barolo, was refurbished and ceremoniously re-lit to celebrate the bicentennial of Argentina. On the 25th of every month, the lighthouse will shine over the city.

August 2009 – A new statue of the beloved cartoon character Mafalda was inaugurated on August 30 at the corner of Chile and Defensa in the barrio of San Telmo. It draws adults and children alike to the bench to take their picture with their favorite cartoon. Â Photo by Beatrice Murch

July 2009 – On July 9th, Argentina’s Independence Day, the feria of Mataderos was in full swing. This couple danced the Argentine dance of Folklore with their kerchiefs and traditional dress as the musicians played on the elevated stage above and the crowd eagerly watched the dancers on the cobblestones.

June 2009 – People of Rosario display what is considered the largest flag in the world. Argentina Flag Day is celebrated in every June 20th in honour of its creator, General Manuel Belgrano. Belgrano created the flag during Argentina’s wars of independence, and it was first hoisted in 1812 near the Paraná river.

May 2009 – More than 300 restaurant and café staff took part in Buenos Aires’ fifth annual waiters’ race. Participants had to carry a tray of drinks from the corner of Avenida de Mayo and Bernardo de Irigoyen, five blocks to Plaza de Mayo and back again, a total distance of 1600 metres.
