Federal judge Norberto Oyarbide yesterday opened prosecution proceedings against Buenos Aires mayor Mauricio Macri for being part of an “illicit association” dedicated to “carrying out spying tasks outside of the law, whilst using the structure of the State”.
Former minister of education in the city government, Mariano Narodowski, also faces prosecution.
The announcement is the latest development in the spying scandal which erupted last year after Ciro James, a close ally of Macri’s, was arrested for tapping various phone conversations including those in the city government’s ministry of education. It was since alleged that the person giving the orders was the mayor himself.
While the announcement comes as little surprise to the mayor and his government, Macri has said he will appeal the charges.
