The march from Guatemala City towards La Paz began this Saturday and will last for eight days. The movement seeks to call attention to the kidnappings of migrants in their attempt to reach the United States. The movement is organized by the Mesoamerican Migrant Movement. It is supported by activists from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala.
The march intends to raise awareness of the problem and to call for changes that will have to be made by the authorities in order to guarantee human rights of migrants.
The protesters will walk a road leading to Mexico, which is commonly used by migrants to enter the United States. A second group will travel by train from the border crossing of El Ceibo to the town of Veracruz. Both groups will join in the municipality of Medias Aguas, Mexico.
The path, known as the “Ruta del Migrante” (Path of Migrants), includes the Mexican states of Tamaulipas, Tabasco and Veracruz. The road which the protesters will travel has the highest number of kidnappings of illegal immigrants. The attackers are in most cases criminal groups who seek to control those territories.
