French Tourist Killed in Plaza San Martín

A French tourist was stabbed to death this morning in Plaza San Martín in the city district of Retiro.

Laurent Schwebel, a 52-year-old man of Illkirch, Graffenstaden was assaulted after a thief tried to steal his camera and bag, metres from the Malvinas memorial.

According to witnesses of the incident, the French photographer was stabbed twice in the chest after trying to fend off the aggressor.

“He pulled his camera close to him and began to shout. He was stabbed and they started to tug at his things,” a witness reported. “The poor man was spouting blood.”

The criminal attempted to escape across the Av. Del Libertador but was caught by the federal police officers who were alerted by a witness.

Alberto Crescenti, the director of emergency medical attention (SAME), said that the ambulance “arrived within four minutes after the alert was raised, but by the time medics tried to resuscitate him, he was already dead.”

The police affirmed that the suspect, of mature age and with prior criminal records, has been arrested and transferred to a penitentiary cell.

Police sources said that the alleged criminal belongs to a small group with a track record for committing robberies in the area. They claimed that it was highly likely that he was accompanied by at least two other accomplices who managed to escape.

Unnamed witnesses, unnamed ‘police sources’. Does this publication do its own reporting or just rehash what was written in the big newspapers?

It is a disgrace to this country(Argentina,)to be murdered while visiting one of it’s national monuments. This incident does not enhance the government’s position on the Malvinas. I find this attack, repugnant and disgusting. Where is the apology from Cristina?!!!
