The activist “Emmo” Sadloo, a member of the National Front of Popular Resistance (FNRP) of Honduras, was assassinated this Wednesday while he worked. Members of the Front called the act a political crime.
Mahadeo Roopchands Sadloo, 55, had accompanied ex-president Manuel Zelaya when he came back secretly to his country in September of 2009.
He was assassinated by a man while he worked at his business in the Honduran capital, Tegucigalpa, who hit him with five bullets. The cause of the attack is still unkown.
“They came to kill him. This is a political crime that President Porfirio Lobo should investigate,” said the head of the Front, Rasel Tomé.
Ex-president Manuel Zelaya condemned the assassination, and also called the homicide a “political crime.” He also called on the Honduran government to investigate the case. Zelaya claimed that the assassination was a “declaration of war” against the Popular Resistance Front.
President Porfirio Lobo promised to investigate the case and made it clear that it was a political crime.
After the coup d’etat that removed Manuel Zelaya from power in 2009, human rights violations, including murders of journalists and political activists, have gone up in Honduras. Last June, NGOs, defendors of Human Rights and European parliaments condemned the 90 percent rise in these violations.
