The Uruguayan government presented a complaint against five of its peacekeepers that participated in the United Nations mission in Haiti.
The announcement was made by the secretary to the President, Alberto Breccia.
This morning the video that shows four Uruguayan soldiers abusing a young Haitian was distributed.
After learning of the incident, the Haitian president, Michel Martelly, denounced the act and called it “collective violation.”
The investigation of the case will include the four soldiers seen in the video and the one that was behind the camera. The complaint also gave notice of the removal of office of the Naval leader of the mission in Haiti.
The initial report by the United Nations confirmed that the acts violated the Code of Conduct of the UN. Despite this, the report ruled out the intention of sexual abuse by those involved.
So far, there are three open judicial investigations, ordered by the United Natins, the commanding officer of the mission, and governmental employees of the Uruguayan Ministry of Defense.
Uruguay contributes 2,422 blue berets to the peacekeeping force of the United Nations, in addition to 900 soldiers in the mission to stabilize Haiti.
