Buenos Aires-based Directors Win Short Film Contest

Filmaka, a global digital entertainment studio and online creative community, today announced Buenos Aires-based directors Ginger Gentile and Gabriel Balanovsky as the winners of its ‘Hard Times’ themed short film competition. The directors won for their film, ‘The Hooker and the Transvetite’ and are now in the running to direct a feature film produced by Filmaka.

Filmaka co-founder and independent film producer Deepak Nayar assured that this year’s short film competition received more entries than ever before, a true accomplishment for the independent film directors. The judge’s panel was nothing to scoff about either, with a star-studded lineup that inlcudes Colin Firth, Bill Pullman and Werner Herzog.

The Hooker and the Transvestite tells the story of an unlikely friendship between a down-on-her-luck prostitute and a kind-hearted transvestite. Gentile and Balanovsky, who are married and co-directed the film, stress that the film was a passion project. They have worked together on several different projects, including Goals for Girls, a feature film about the struggle of the young women in Villa 31 who want to play a sport that is off limits to women in Argentina.

“The story uses humor to talk about hunger and sex workers, refusing to victimize them. All of our projects seek to break stereotypes and take viewers to extreme situations in ways that are palatable and entertaining,” said the duo. They formed San Telmo Productions in 2008, one of Buenos Aires’ fast-growing production companies.
