At least 15 people were taken to hospital with minor injuries on Saturday morning after a commercial train crashed into another doing maintenance work.
The accident happened at about 11am. The train was arriving at Constitución, a major Buenos Aires train station, from Bahía Blanca, a city ten hours away by rail.
The maintenance train, which was carrying out track repairs, had made a wrong manoeuvre and wandered onto the main line. The two trains collided side-on, with one carriage of the maintenance train being knocked on to the track, blocking the line to Quilmes.
Passengers suffered minor cuts and bruises, but were nevertheless transported to Argerich and Ramos Mejía hospitals in Buenos Aires.
One woman was treated on the train by paramedic staff after suffering from post-traumatic stress.
Police continue to investigate the incident.
Although passengers on board were lucky to escape relatively unscathed, Buenos Aires continues to have a high number of transport accidents, on the road and on trains.
Safety on public transport should be paramount, yet the Buenos Aires government does not seem to be reacting to the problem.
