Honduras: Teacher Unions Go in Depth With Forceful Measures

Honduranean teachers stress the importance of paying the debt that the national government owes to the Institute of Precaution of the Magistrate. As of last week, the teachers began a strike and rejected the last proposal made by President Porfirio Lobo.

The President proposed to cancel part of the debt and pay the rest in a progressive form. The leader of the Federation of Magisterial Organizations, Eduardo Casaña, assured they would not accept the government’s proposal. Casaña informed that the actual state debt since 2007, inlcuding pensions and retirement is more than 158 million dollars.

The teachers said they will continue with the strike until Lobos sits down with them to discuss solutions. Teachers from different regions went to Tegucigalpa this week to mobilize and determine what demands need to be made. The Federation is a group of 50,000 teachers spread all over the country.

President Lobo reiterated this week that he would not compensate teachers for days lost during the strike.
