Brazil announced trade sanctions worth up to $294.7m against the United States, in a move supported by the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The sanctions, which were publicised on Monday, are a response to billions of dollars worth of illegal subsidies to the US cotton industry, which have allowed the US to undersell foreign competitors and drive down world cotton prices. Sanctions will affect up to 100 American goods, from fresh fruit to automobiles.

Earlier this month, former Argentine President Carlos Menem and six other members of his administration were indicted and put under arrest for obstructing the investigation of the 1994 bombing of the Argentine Israelite Mutual Aid Society. Accused of covering up evidence and protecting a key suspect, the indictment is a relief to the large Jewish Argentine community who awaits closure on the case.

Sticking their hands inside the pens, little kids giggle as they try to pet a 500kg cow while their parents adoringly take pictures. A few feet away at a restaurant called ‘Las Razas’, hungry customers are busy ordering steak after steak. Some Argentines at the annual Buenos Aires agro-fair are probably even eyeing the prized cows for their next parrilla.
