Only a few weeks after President Mauricio Macri stated that he would not consider legalising abortion, the crew at the National Campaign for Legal, Safe, and Free Abortion in Buenos Aires (yes, it’s a mouthful) are pursuing the cause as resolutely as ever. And tomorrow, 13th August, you can join them for the evening at the Festival for Legal Abortion at El Emergente in Almagro.
The Campaign’s slogan is straightforward: Sexual Education to Make Decisions. Contraception to Prevent Abortions. Legal Abortions to Prevent Deaths. This is not an exaggeration in a country where as many as 80,000 women are hospitalised from complications from illegal abortions each year.
But Saturday evening is not only about alarming statistics. “We are having a festival to spread the word, get together, and celebrate our fight for the right to decide,” says Celeste MacDougall, an activist for the campaign. “Many artists support our cause and are part of the fight for the right to legal abortion. Doing this festival is a way to showcase our struggle.”
The event promises an interesting evening and includes a book fair, live bands such as Planctons and Todos los Problemas, a photo exhibit, and stand up comedy with Maria (Virginia) Godoy, aka Srta. Bimbo.
If you want to show your support for a good cause and have a memorable evening, head over to El Emergente, Acuña de Figueroa 1030, Almagro tomorrow night, from 8pm until 5am. Entrance is $50 pesos. For more information, see the event page on Facebook.
