Planned Legal Abortion Suspended Today

The legal abortion planned to happen Tuesday was suspended after an injunction was filed by the Catholic group Pro Vida against the operation.

The 32-year-old woman was approved for a legal abortion scheduled for today at Ramos Mejia Hospital. She was a victim of rape and human trafficking and her pregnancy was within the legal gestation period.

Pro Vida lawyer commented on the suspension saying, “the right of the child’s life cannot be subject to the mother’s decision”.

Last Friday, Buenos Aires mayor Mauricio Macri vetoed a “non-punishable” abortion law passed in September that legalised abortion in cases of rape and risk of life to the mother.

According to Macri, this particular abortion case had passed “all legal” protocol.

Health Minister Juan Manzur said, “It is Macri’s responsibility. He should define and do something about the situation.”

Romina Tejerina Released

Romina Tejerina was released from prison yesterday morning after serving 9 years for the murder of her newborn child. Tejerina became a national feminist symbol when she conceived after a rape but was denied an abortion.

Tejerina gave birth secretly in her sisters bathroom seven months after conception and moments later, killed the child by placing her in a cardboard box and stabbing it 20 times. The baby died in a hospital two days later. Her rapist has never been convicted

Tejerina’s case went to court in 2005, two years after she was raped and gave birth to her unwanted baby. The Criminal Court of Jujuy unanimously decided on a sentence of 14 years to be served in the Penal de Mujeres Alto Comedero de San Salvador de Jujuy. The Prosecution initially called for a life sentence but reduced this on the basis of mitigating factors.

Tejerina, who was 19 at the time of her rape, hid the violation and subsequent pregnancy from everyone but her sister. She has accused Eduardo Vargas, a businessman and brother of a local politician, of raping her in 2002 but Vargas denies this, claiming the relationship was consensual. He has never been convicted of the crime.

Fernando Molina, Tejerina’s defence lawyer, claimed this was unjust and pointed to the deep psychological trauma suffered by the young woman as a result of her rape and pregnancy. She has become a figurehead for society and feminist groups who argue for the recognition of her rape and suffering. Her inability to be granted an abortion sparked debate across argentine society about women’s rights.

“Romina’s face is the visible face of pain that touches the lives of many women” said her sister, Mirta Tejerina, “This isn’t just one person’s problem, it’s a problem that faces us all.”

Tejerina was released yesterday according to the terms of her sentence. She was liberated on the day of her 29th birthday, 7 years after her conviction.

Weekly News Roundup, May 4th.

It’s Friday again!

And I have bad news for you: the Malvinas clusterfuck is back in full force!

Because now that the YPF expropriation bill has been passed, what other nationalist cause are we going to be distracted with? The 2014 World Cup is still more than two years away, so that’s a no.

So I guess there’s no choice but to dust off the Malvinas playbook and start yelling at British people again.

Here’s everything you need to know (but don’t want to know):

  • Wenlock and Mandeville, the terrifying mascots of the 2012 London Olympics. I don't condone violence but I must admit it will be funny to see an Argentine athlete kicking them in the crotch in order to make a point about Malvinas. Not because I care about the islands, but because they're just plain ugly. (Photo/Wikipedia)

Since I’m sure you didn’t go to Velez for the Cristina-palooza last week, here’s the 40-minute speech she gave before thousands of flag-waving, ecstatic youngsters who attended the event to celebrate her existence. Since I’m willing to bet my life that you didn’t click on that link, let me tell you: she basically glorified young people as the future of the nation and told the crowds to remain “united and organized.” Also there was a lot of yelling, even though she was standing two centimeters away from the microphone. All in all, a positive experience for those who survived the yelling.

  • In what could be considered the most awkward exchange of passive-aggressive smiles and ice-cold stares since Alien Vs. Predator, newly appointed Argentine ambassador to the UK Alicia Castro put British Foreign Secretary William Hague in the hot seat as he launched the annual world review of human rights at a ceremony in London.  Sitting right in front of him on the first row as he took the podium, Castro once again repeated the local government’s mantra regarding the Malvinas/Falklands and asked him point blank (or “ambushed,” as The Telegraph put it) if he was ready to give peace a chance. Enjoy the video.
  • Since this Wednesday marked the 30th. anniversary of the sinking of the General Belgrano cruiser during the Malvinas War, Cristina found yet another excuse to hold a ceremony related to the Malvinas. In a televised speech she gave from the Pink House she inaugurated the  brand new (*rolls eyes*) “Malvinas Argentinas Courtyard” and then she defended ambassador Castro’s actions, saying that “refusing to engage in dialogue is unsustainable,” a funny thing to say considering she refuses to talk to journalists since like, ever. She also criticized the permanent members of the  UN Security Council (i.e.: the US and the UK) saying that they always force other countries to follow UN resolutions but they themselves refuse to abide by them, which is actually kind of true.
  • Alright, I’m sure you feel refreshed now. And dirty. Let’s go back to Malvinas.
  • The 2012 London Olympics are right around the corner, and God knows what kind of fuckery will transpire there between the Argentine and the British teams. But if what happened this week is any indication, we’re in for a fun winter of gold medals and diplomatic shenanigans that will certainly end once the Olympic torch goes out and David Cameron little-boys Buenos Aires.  Everyone in the UK and the Malvinas/Falklands was up in arms yesterday after a controversial TV spot aired in Argentina, depicting the Argentine national hockey team captain Fernando Zylberberg “training” on the islands. As if that weren’t insulting enough (for the British), the ad concludes with the phrase “To compete on British soil, we train on Argentine soil.” Oh, snap!
  • And to add insult to injury, the ad was created by Young & Rubicam, an advertising agency that belongs to – you guessed it – a British company.  God, August cannot come fast enough. I’m gonna have so much to write about I may have to start doing a Daily News Roundup.
  • In YPF news, I totally spoiled it at the beginning already but the

Many criticized The Sun for printing such a disrespectful headline after the sinking of the General Belgrano. But many more failed to realize that even more disrespectful is that The Sun is all about girls showing their tits. (Photo/Wikipedia)

expropriation bill has been passed, which means that Argentina now owns 51 percent of the oil company. Yay!

  • Also this week, two romantic revolutionaires decided that a good way to make a point about something was to set off a bomb outside the European Union‘s offices in Recoleta. God bless these people, and their fight for peace by blowing stuff up.
  • Another tourist allegedly raped in Salta. The suspect has already turned himself in, assuring that he was in a relationship with the victim, a 21-year-old Swiss woman who was doing volunteer work there. I have no idea what the hell is going on there, but stay away.
  • Also in Salta this week, since such attacks pose a PR nightmare to the tourism industry there, the media (that’s us!) found a way to distract the population with a most sensationalist story that was covered by every network in the country: the tragic, heartbreaking story of an 8-year-old girl that was seen driving around in a car.
  • No, really. That happened. And boy, people were outraged. I mean, look at that video! The low quality! The shaky camera! The epic soundtrack! Rape? What rape?
  • Now onto the football part, which always comes last because it is obviously the least important one: Congratulations football megastar Lionel Messi! Not only you’re going to be a father soon, but this week you broke yet another record! After scoring his 68th. goal this season, Messi broke the record for goals scored in a European club season, previously held by some German guy called Gerd Müller. I have no idea what any of this means, all I know is that I get more internet hits thanks to it.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Swiss Tourist Rape Case in Salta

A Swiss tourist travelling in Argentina has claimed that she was raped by a taxi driver in Salta. The victim was doing volunteer work in the area, organised through the Anglican Church.

The incident involving a 21 year old tourist is the latest in a string of similar cases that have occurred recently in the area. A Mexican girl as well as a female tourist from the US have both reported similar stories.

According to a local paper, El Tribuno, the incident occurred as the victim got a taxi near the bus station on Saturday.

The young tourist is said to have headed to the Anglican Church after the incident to get help, then to the police station to report what happened. She described the attacker in detail and there are hopes that he will be caught soon.

The tourist, who speaks good Spanish, spoke to the driver, telling him she needed to buy certain things before going home to her country. The driver then took her to an area that she did not recognise, where the attack is said to have happened.

Tests later revealed evidence of sexual abuse, and CCTV tapes have also provided indications of what happened.

“We are going to resolve this case urgently, to make the area safe for residents and visitors,” said Marcelo Lami, chief of police in Salta, to el Tribuno.

Witness in Police Rape Case Killed

A protected witness in a sexual abuse case involving a minor, in which police were implicated, died of stab wounds yesterday in Trelew.

The courts had ordered the 22-year-old man, now identified as Bruno Rodríguez, to leave Chubut province because of the potential risks to his life after he became the key witness in a sexual abuse case earlier this year.

Sergio Rey, the lawyer for the rape victim, confirmed yesterday that Rodríguez had been killed. He also announced that there were currently no suspects in the murder case.

Reports say Rodríguez came back to Trelew, the second largest city in Chubut, to complete paperwork a few days ago. He came unaccompanied by police protection, and suffered three stab wounds in violent scenes early yesterday morning.

He was unconscious when he was discovered, and he was taken to the emergency room. He was pronounced dead soon after noon, without giving any clue about who his assailants were.

Rodríguez was the key witness in a high profile case in which nine policemen were accused of raping a 16-year-old boy at a police station.

On the 18th January, 2011, the teen was arrested for hitting his girlfriend in the street. He was taken to the police station and a few days later his family claimed that various policemen beat him up and raped him. Forensic tests later confirmed the abuse.

Police had arrested Rodríguez for armed robbery weeks before the abuse of the minor and he apparently witnessed the rape at the police station.

Haiti: U.N. Soldiers Found Guilty of Rape

Three Pakistani United Nations soldiers have been convicted of raping a 14-year-old boy in Haiti. Despite previous reports of abuses, it is the first time U.N. peacekeepers had ever been prosecuted in the country.

U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky confirmed the local reports in a press briefing.

“A senior Pakistani official visited Haiti on March 8 and 9 to meet with Haitian authorities,” he said. “[The] three individuals were found guilty of sexual exploitation and abuse through a court martial proceeding undertaken in accordance with the national laws of Pakistan.”

The men have been dishonorably discharged, and for now will be incarcerated for one year upon their return to Pakistan. However, various protesters have demanded that the guilty parties carry out their prison sentence in Haiti.

When asked by CNN if a one-year sentence was fitting given the severity of the crime, Nesirky responded that the matter was between the two countries, not the U.N.

“The United Nations will not comment on the terms of the punishment under the member-states, the judicial procedure,” he said. “But, as we stated from the outset, the United Nations considers this to be a case of the most serious sexual exploitation and abuse.”

U.N. spokeswoman Sylvie van den Wildenberg announced that Pakistan is seeking to compensate the victims, although no amount has yet been determined. She additionally confirmed that on Friday, Islamabad withdrew its 150-member peacekeeping mission, according to various news sources.  It is unclear whether the country plans to reinstate forces in the future.

Tourists Report Sexual Assaults in Salta

A young woman from the United States says she suffered sexual abuse after a night clubbing in Salta while earlier in the week, a Japanese tourist reported being sexually assaulted by a tour guide on an outdoor trip.

The Japanese woman claims to have been raped by a guide on a trip to Cafayate in the East of Salta. According to the police report, the abuser asked her to take her clothes off to cross a river and then abused her.

Provincial tourism authorities warn people about the dangers in that zone, including unauthorized tour guides.

The woman from the US claims she was raped after partying at a local nightclub. She went to the police and told them that she didn’t remember anything of the previous night and then woke up next to an unknown man in a hotel room.

Minister of Security of Salta, Maximilian Trojan, says the woman filed a false complaint, as authorities have not found any evidence.

He did, however, confirm the abuse of the Japanese woman, but blamed it on her trusting the rapist too much. “If I go to Japan and I get told that in order to climb a volcano I have to get naked, I would decide whether to do it or not.” he said: “People trust others a bit too much when going to a foreign country.”

In July 2011, two French tourists were murdered in Salta’s province during an eco-tour. The two girls, named Cassandre Bouvier and Houria Moumni, disappeared on 15th July, and their bodies were found on 29th July in Quebrada de San Lorenzo, 12km from the city. The girls were sexually abused and brutally murdered. The three men accused of raping and murdering them were sentenced on 17th October.

The event had a great impact on public opinion both nationally and internationally, with French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, speaking publicly on the matter.

Man Accused of Raping Daughter

A 38-year-old man has been taken into custody in Bahía Blanca, accused of raping his 11-year-old daughter and filming the act on his mobile phone.

The girl’s 15-year-old half-brother, who has a different father, suspected something was going on and informed the police when he found incriminating images and videos on the man’s mobile phone.

Both children live with their mother in Rosario but have been spending the summer holidays with the girl’s father since the beginning of January.

The man’s name is being withheld to protect the girl’s identity.

When authorities received the evidence, they went to the man’s house in the Mariano Moreno neighbourhood, about 25 blocks from the centre of town. They detained the man in question and raided the residence.

There, they found a large quantity of alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, pornographic material and sex toys, according to prosecutor María Marta Corrado.

The man works at a local commercial firm and has no previous criminal record.

“He seemed like a normal person … Like in most of these cases, these are ordinary people,” Corrado explained to Canal 7. “Most of the time, you wouldn’t suspect that this sort of perversity takes place within these family scenes.”

The man would get between 8 and 20 years in prison if he is found guilty of sexually abusing a family member. He will also be investigated for sexually abusing a minor, and the police have suspicions that he shared the images with other people, and this would lead to further charges.

“The evidence we have relating to this case is very convincing; it directly compromises the accused,” Corrado said.

The children are staying with a family friend and will be reunited with their mother when she arrives from Rosario later today.

Chubut Police Accused of Beating and Raping a Minor in Trelew

Eleven Chubut officers were detained Thursday following accusations of beating and sodomizing a 16-year old male.

They are accused of “seriously offensive sex abuse”…”committed by police personnel.”

Six of the original officers arrested for the alleged abuse have been freed, while the other five remain in custody. If found guilty, they could face 8 to 25 years in prison.

Of those still detained, four are suspected to have been responsible for the actual abuse, while the fifth is said to have stood by.

The youth was arrested on Wednesday while having a discussion with his girlfriend, under an anonymous accusation that he had attacked a woman on the highway.

After being released into the custody of his mother, the youth told her that he was beaten by the officers, and was taken to the hospital to seek medical attention.

Shortly thereafter, the minor revealed to his mother that he had additionally been anally raped with a blunt instrument, likely by an officer’s baton. Forensic results of the youth’s wounds confirmed his accusations.

After the adolescent’s mother reported the incident, ten officers were arrested after lending their services in a Trelew raid. Citing the “gravity” of the acts in this case, Chubut governor Martin Buzzi dismissed the leader of the provincial police, general commissioner Néstor Siri, and displaced Trelew precinct leader Juan Carlos Contreras.

“It is an aberrant event, one that is being investigated for the attorney general María Tolomei,” said Jorge Miquelarena, ombudsmen of the province Chubut.

The troops implicated in the incident were from the second precinct of Chubut; the same who were involved in repressing a recent truck driver demonstration with rubber bullets on Wednesday.
