The first big Argentine films of 2016, 8 Tiros and Resurrección, premiered in cinemas last week, and with them the year for national cinema has started. After several recent international hits (including El Secreto de Sus Ojos and Relatos Salvajes) there are plenty more local productions coming out in 2016. Here is a list of some of the films to look out for on the big screen in the following months.

A book publisher is determined to commit suicide when Silvia Beltrán, a young writer threatens him with her own suicide if he decides not to publish her novel. This film was part of the International Competition in the 2015 Mar del Plata film festival and will soon be on general release. It stars Alejandro Awada, Marina Glezer, and Diego Peretti, and is directed by Alejandro Agresti. Release date: 10th March.
Me casé con un boludo: After the great success ‘Un novio para mi mujer’ (2008) was, its director Juan Taruto, and main actors Valeria Bertucceli and Adrian Suar are back together for a new romantic comedy. It will be about a newlywed couple. The wife starts having second thoughts about this marriage and the husband will try the impossible to get her back. Release date: 17th March.

Angelita, la doctora: Ana María Picchio plays a nurse who visits her patients every day, and has to take care of her conflicted son, played by Chino Darín. The films follows different stories, all connected through this character. Release date: 7th April.
Al final del túnel: A wheelchair-bound man called Joaquín spends his days in a big and old house. A woman and her daughter decide to rent one of the rooms, after Joaquín puts an advert in the newspaper. After a while, he finds out that there’s a tunnel beneath his home which is being used by some robbers that are planning to assault a bank. He also finds out that Berta, the woman living with him, is involved with this gang. The cast is formed by Leonardo Sbaraglia, Clara Lago, and Pablo Echarri, and the film is directed Rodrigo Grande. Release date: 14th April.
The prolific Ricardo Darín stars as an ex-navy captain from the army during the last military dictatorship in this big budget Argentine-Spanish co-production. Sebastian Borenstzein is the director, and it’s his second film with Darín after previously worked together on Un cuento chino (Chinese Take-Away). Actor Oscar Martinez and actress Inma Cuesta are also in it. Release date: 12th May.
Zama: This film is based on the 1950s novel from Antonio Di Benedetto. It will be about a 17th century Spanish officer called Zama, who is waiting at Asunción to be transferred to Buenos Aires. Among the cast of the film is Juan Minujín, and Rafael Spregelburd. Lucrecia Martel (who worked previously in La ciénaga) is the director, and Pedro Almodóvar was in charge of the production. Release date: 2nd June.
La pareja perfecta: This is the new project from Relatos Salvajes (Wild Tales) director, Damián Szifrón. It is one of the most anticipated films of the year, after the success of that Oscar nominated movie. The plot is still unknown, but the director confirmed that it will be a romantic comedy. Release date: 24th November.
